Rescue drill in the open sea: the importance of safety on board

With the image of Spitsbergen peaks still in our eyes, around midday we could hear the loudspeaker announcing a helicopter rescue drill for training purpose, to be run on the deck.

Given the special occasion, we had the permission to enter the bridge, where the captain welcomed us, and we took advantage of the optimal point of view to take pictures of the scene.

The helicopter approached the ship and, when it was above the deck, first deployed a rope, collected by a member of the crew, and then - in succession – two persons, who were gently set down on the deck from the hovering helicopter. A few minutes later the two people were lifted again by the helicopter, which rapidly flew away.

This drill is only an aspect of the safety issue on board a ship.

As written in a previous post, before being officially accepted on board we had to attend a short course on safety and confirm that we have understood all they had taught us.

Moreover, as we already knew, we had to take with us and wear some safety equipment, like shoes and helmet (the last one provided by the ship personnel). Some working areas are accessible only wearing helmet and if someone forgets to do so, he/she is gently reminded.

A good lesson to remember also when we get back to our work!

Avevamo ancora negli occhi le immagini delle cime di Spitsbergen quando, intorno a mezzogiorno, abbiamo sentito dall’altoparlante l’avviso di una esercitazione di salvataggio con elicottero, che si sarebbe svolta di lì a poco sul ponte.

Data l’occasione particolare, abbiamo avuto il permesso di salire in plancia, dove ci ha accolto il capitano, ed abbiamo approfittato dell’ottima visuale per fotografare la scena.

L’elicottero si è avvicinato alla  nave e, quando è stato sopra il ponte, ha lanciato una cima raccolta da un membro dell’equipaggio. Successivamente, dall’elicottero in volo stazionario, due persone sono state calate sul ponte una dopo l’altra. Infine, dopo pochi minuti, le due persone sono state sollevare e caricate di nuovo sull’elicottero che si è allontanato velocemente.

Questa esercitazione è soltanto un aspetto della questione sicurezza a bordo di una nave.

Come ho scritto in un post precedente, prima di essere accolti a bordo della G.O.Sars, abbiamo dovuto seguire un breve corso sulla sicurezza e confermare per iscritto di aver compreso tutto ciò che ci è stato insegnato.

Inoltre, come sapevamo in anticipo, dovevamo avere con noi e indossare alcune dotazioni di sicurezza, come scarpe e casco (quest’utimo fornito dal personale della nave). In alcune aree di lavoro si può entrare solo indossando casco e scarpe di sicurezza e, se qualcuno se ne dimentica, glielo viene gentilmente ricordato.

Una buona lezione da tenere a mente quando torneremo al nostro lavoro.
